Congratulations to senior Tanner Sorensen recipient of the 53rd Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Male Athlete of the Year for 2017. The Award is presented annually to the Salem/Keizer young male whose leadership and achievement in one or more sports distinguishes him as outstanding.
Sorensen exemplified this throughout his years at Sprague. He was a three-sport athlete, participating in football, wrestling, and baseball all four years. In his final seasons, not only did the he succeed as an individual, the teams he was a part of made their mark in school’s history. Football earned the title of co-Greater Valley League Champions and played it to the quarterfinals. Wrestling took the League title, as well as going undefeated in League duals, and place second in the 6A State Wrestling Tournament. Baseball placed 5th in the final OSAA State Rankings, and hosted a playoff game for the first time in five years. As an individual, his list of achievements was nothing short of impressive:
Football: 1st Team, Offensive Linemen (unanimous vote), 2nd team Defensive Lineman and All State Honorable Mention, Offensive Linemen.
Wrestling: District Champion, 220lb class and 5th place at State, 220lb class
Baseball: 1stTeam 1st Baseman (unanimous vote), hitting .400 for two consecutive years.
Oly Pageant: As individual throughout the year he raised nearly $5000 for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital
Sorensen’s final high school career appearance will be at the Les Schawb Bowl on Saturday June 24 at Hillsboro Stadium (Kickoff at 12:30 PM). He will continue his career at Linfield College where he plans to pursue a degree in Business Marketing and participate in their football and baseball programs.
